Light signaling of the escape route: an innovative solution

For good fire prevention and preparedness to face extraordinary events, it is essential to prepare the correct signaling of escape routes. Characteristics of escape routes

According to Legislative Decree 81/2008, escape routes must be "designed to guarantee the safe exit of the workplace for the people present".

In particular, the minimum characteristics must be stated, that is, they must:

• always be free so that a safe place can be reached in the shortest possible time,
• have a number and size appropriate to the size of the workplace, their location, intended use and installed equipment, as well as the maximum number of people who can stay in such places,
• highlighted with specific characters, in accordance with applicable regulations,
• equipped with appropriate emergency lighting.

As can be read from the last two points, the decree underlines the importance of the correct signaling of escape routes, which must be marked with visible signs even in the absence of light, in the presence of smoke and in difficult psychological conditions, typical of times of emergency.

For this reason, photoluminescent boards with pictograms, inscriptions and directional arrows are usually used, but also photoluminescent tapes that show the way forward and the presence of any obstacles such as stairs or pillars.
